The United States needs both. It certainly can not allow itself to stagnate, or fail to continuously evolve. Progressives, aid in the growth and development of the U.S. The U.S. also needs to embrace and maintain its own identity in the world. That is where the conservatives come in.

I’ll use a Korean period, to show an example of progressive wisdom: There is a Korean drama, that takes place during the Joseon period. The name of the drama is, Tree With Deep Roots.

King Sejong is a celebrated Korean ruler who can literally say he invented the alphabet. He was also one of two rulers in the country’s history awarded the titles “the Great.” Sejong the Great was the fourth king of the Joseon Dynasty, and ruled from 1418 – 1450.Mar 12, 2011

If King Sejong hadn’t been a progressive (of course, at the time, he surely didn’t think in terms of being a progressive or conservative), the Korean alphabet may not have come into being. He met a lot of resistance. There were those who would kill him, and attempted just that. You see, the nobles of the time, felt that allowing the masses to read and write using this alphabet, would adversely effect their rank and power. It had something to do with the nobles knowing the Chinese characters which elevated them above the rank of the masses.

An American example of progressiveness can be traced back to the founding of the U.S. -The drafting of the declaration of independence. I believe that the United States is the offspring of Great Britain. Great Britain didn’t know it at the time, but that country is the parent to the United States. The coming into being of the United States was an evolutionary process, with its roots in Great Britain. That is why the bond between the United States and Great Britain should never be broken.

On June 11, 1776, Congress appointed a “Committee of Five” to draft a declaration, consisting of John Adams of Massachusetts,Benjamin Franklin of Pennsylvania, Thomas Jefferson of Virginia,Robert R. Livingston of New York, and Roger Sherman of Connecticut.

I wrote this because I found myself disliking progressives, because of the negative talk in the media about progressives. Then, I remembered some positive outcomes that were due to progressives. I do not know where this country will go from here. I just believe that the world needs progressives. As noted above, they may not always be met with open arms.
